Richard Dawkins is een evolutiebioloog. Hij wordt gezien als een van meest invloedrijke mensen ter wereld. De reden daarvoor is zijn niet aflatende stroom met populairwetenschappelijke boeken. Richard is daarnaast een uiterst begenadigd schrijver en een charismatisch spreker die zich oprecht afvraagt waarom de wereld om hem heen hem niet begrijpt.

In de documentaire the root of all evil, is dit onbegrip van zijn gezicht te lezen als hij praat met een Amerikaans TV predikant. Dezelfde predikant die later publiekelijk moest uitleggen dat hij vele homoseksuele contacten had gehad en zijn vrouw talloze malen had bedrogen. Maar wel gelooft in god.

Richard is een vreselijk begenadigde schrijver met een akelige feitenkennis en elk boek wat hij schrijft is een absolute verrijking van je kennis. Clinton Richard Dawkins zoals zijn volledige naam luidt, is geboren op 26 maart 1941 in Nairobi in Kenia. Hij is woonachtig in Oxford, Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Richard Dawkins tegen het geloof

Hoewel hij christelijk is opgevoed verliet hij de godsdienst al op jonge leeftijd omdat hij vond dat evolutie de enige logische verklaring voor het leven gaf. Met de jaren is hij zich steeds sterker gaan afzetten tegen het geloof. Als overtuigd atheïst lijkt hij soms een ware kruistocht tegen het geloof te zijn begonnen. Hij schuwt het daarbij niet op harde bewoordingen te gebruiken. Volgens Dawkins is het gelovig maken van kinderen door hun godsdienstonderricht op te leggen, geestelijk misbruik en hij stelt het op gelijke hoogte als lichamelijk misbruik.

Richard Dawkins bestseller the god delusion ofwel god als misvatting is zijn aanval op het geloof in een bovennatuurlijke, almachtige en alwetende god en de daarbij behorende dogmatiek. Alle argumenten die gelovigen gebruiken om hun gelijk te bewijzen worden genadeloos door zijn vlijmscherpe pen onderuit gehaald.

Hij houdt een pleidooi voor atheïsme ("We are all atheists about most of the gods that societies have ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.") en vraagt gelijkgestemden om uit de kast te komen. In sommige landen is het ervoor uitkomen dat je niet gelooft gelijk aan de doodstraf over je uit preken of een doodsteek voor je politiek ambities.

Dat is natuurlijk een absurde situatie.

Richard Dawkins is iemand die velen choqueert met zijn uitspraken, zelfs voor zijn aanhangers gaat hij behoorlijk ver, maar zijn intenties zijn integer. Laat daar geen misverstand over bestaan.

Ik wil het artikel graag afsluiten met een paar citaten:

Flowers and elephants are 'for' the same thing as everything else in the living kingdoms, for spreading Duplicate Me programs written in DNA language. Flowers are for spreading copies of instructions for making more flowers. Elephants are for spreading copies of instructions for making more elephants.
