Na de eerder verschenen Call of Duty: Black Ops review van Game Informer zijn nu ook reviews van andere publicaties verschenen. Hoogste tijd voor een Call of Duty: Black Ops review explosie! Wat vindt de pers van de game? Is Treyarch er in geslaagd om het niveau van Infinity Ward te evenaren?
We trappen af met de Call of Duty: Black Ops review van CVG, waarin de game wordt beoordeeld met een 9.3. CVG schrijft het volgende over de game:

Treyarch has served up a gorgeous, smart Call Of Duty that should to appeal to online nuts and single-player enthusiasts alike. [...] A thrilling and brutal single-player campaign that’s one of the series’ best. But will you be blown away by multiplayer the fourth time around?

Gametrailers beoordeelt Black Ops eveneens met een 9.3 en concludeert:

Call of Duty: Black Ops spends a little too much time in the bunker playing it safe, but it’s a robust, quality product from top to bottom. The campaign is brief but memorable, and the multiplayer has taken millions of hours of real world testing to heart. The total amount of worthwhile content makes paying full price for most other games feel like a crime. Treyarch has closed the gap between its games and the Modern Warfare franchise with boundless customization, a keen sense of what makes the formula a success, and listening to fans.

We gaan verder met de review van Videogamer, waarin de game wordt beoordeeld met een 9/10. Videogamer concludeert:

Treyarch isn’t trying to reinvent the formula which made Modern Warfare 2 the most successful video game of all time, but it has laid down solid multiplayer foundations while adding a series of necessary and intelligent tweaks – which should be music to the ears of the game’s many fans. A spectacular but silly single-player campaign rounds off the package, and while it comes without Modern Warfare 2′s ambitious (but unsuccessful) attempt at carving out a political message, Black Ops offers its own thoroughly enjoyable romp through some entertaining set-pieces.

Minder dan Mw2?

Giant Bomb is iets minder positief, maar beoordeelt Call of Duty: Black Ops alsnog met 4/5 sterren. Uit de conclusie van de review:

Do you want to play more Call of Duty? I’m guessing the answer is yes, and by all means, Black Ops is worth playing. But for all its ambitious steps to set itself apart from the previous games, it flounders in a few too many of those areas to be a total success. But the heart of the series–its competitive multiplayer–lives on quite well, which should be enough to satisfy most fans of the franchise.

Kritiek

Ook Eurogamer is kritisch, maar ziet alsnog genoeg potentie en kwaliteit om de game te beoordelen met een 8/10 als eindcijfer. Een citaat uit de review:

Call of Duty has long since settled into an enormously successful rhythm, and the good news for Activision is that Black Ops does little to disrupt it. The campaign is relentlessly aggressive and spectacular – a Jerry Bruckheimer tribute act stuck in permanent encore – while the multiplayer modes are a mixture of smart tweaks to working formulas, as focused on protecting that guaranteed bottom line as the campaign’s yellow objective cursor is on making sure you never falter. The results are never less than entertaining whatever you choose to do, then, but not exactly brave and bold either.

We sluiten het overzicht af met de (Franstalige) review van Gamekult, waarin Black Ops wordt beoordeelt met een 7/10. Gamekult stelt dat Treyarch met Black Ops waarschijnlijk haar beste game tot nu toe heeft neergezet. Het script van het verhaal wordt geprezen, maar over de uitwerking hiervan is de review minder positief.

Singleplayer

De singleplayer is volgens Gamekult divers en actierijk, maar heeft niet een constant hoog niveau. Volgens Gamekult is Treyarch er wel in geslaagd om de goede elementen uit World at War te kopiëren naar Black Ops, maar is de game uiteindelijk niet heel vernieuwend.

Call of Duty: Black Ops heeft op dit moment een gemiddelde score van 86% op Metacritic. Zodra er reviews verschijnen van overige grote publicaties, zullen we deze lijst updaten!
